Early Garden

Second crop from early planting

This year I tried an experimental row of peppers. Nothing fancy just a prepared soil bed, a black plastic solar IRT mulch and a drip irrigation hose. I planted NorthStar Bell pepper, Big Chile II Anaheim Chile, Lipstick pimento and Garden Salsa mild chile. I got them in around the normal time for peppers here in our Northern climate. I played around by picking buds off some and leaving them on others.

I had some peppers ripen incredibly early. By the beginning of August I was eating plenty already which is great considering I didn’t get in the ground early. I got tomatoes around the same time so I was making fresh salsa about every second night. I used all of the mild peppers on one plant and I DID use all the Big Chile II’s from one plant. I left that plant because it was beginning to flower again and to my surprise I was getting a second crop from it!

Now that may not be fantastic to some but considering our climate I thought it was. I only employed a couple simple early garden techniques and was able to reap a double harvest from my Anaheim Chile peppers.

Keep in mind next year that by planting early, conserving water and keeping insects and disease at bay you can easily reap an extended or double harvest from some crops.
